Because I Know Who I Am

Apr 7th, 2008 | By Suzanne | Category: Accountability | |

I was watching a favorite movie the other night (Moonstruck, starring Cher and Nicolas Cage) and a line jumped out at me and made me think. For those of you who’ve seen the movie, it was in the scene when Olympia Dukakis (who plays the Cher’s character’s mother) was being walked home by John Mahoney (you probably know him best as Frasier’s dad).

They get to her house and he wants to be invited in. She says, “No, I think the house is empty. I can’t invite you in because I’m married and because I know who I am.”

Because I know who I am.

How much of life’s drama we can avoid if we know who we are. I’m here to tell you - it’s a lot! Knowing who you are and where your boundaries are gives you a confidence that isn’t easily shaken.

I realized as I get to know who I am, my sense of self is strengthened. I have a sense of clarity about life that I haven’t had before. I’m no longer looking to things or other people to define me - I’m discovering who I am by looking inward instead of outward.

Do you know who you are?

  1. Suzanne, I enjoy your site. It is great to be introduced with your voice recording when entering. To comment on this blog; isn’t that what life is all about? Finding who we are? I find that it comes in increments from experiences. Step by step we either choose into getting to know ourselves as we take responsibility for our lives or we get lost in stories to justify the sell-outs and self sabotage. What a journey!!!! I am older than you chronologically, and I can say that I know who I am in this moment. But isn’t it really a life-time journey of self-discovery that never ends? After all, can we ever KNOW anyone, including ourself (as far as the personality)? For me the only ONE I can know is my true Self who is deep within that I join with in meditation.

Well, I am rambling, but thank you for sharing yourself with all of us in your website. Blessings………..

  2. Linda, thanks for your readership and for taking the time to comment!

You are absolutely right - finding out who we really are IS what life is all about. And I agree with you - it is a life-time journey that never ends. Things are always changing and so are we, but we can strive to know ourselves in this moment, as you say.

Please come back and ‘ramble’ with me often!

  3. Hi Suzanne…thanks for the post. I’m just now having a chance to respond. I LOVE this question. It’s kind of like the morning “wake up question” that I ask myself every day. And, I love adding…”Who am I becoming”?

Because you’re always so willing to engage with me on this playground of life, I’d like to ask, “Who Are You?” I was SO inspired by your question, I responded on my blog. Come on over to my playground and share your answer….let’s play!
