How to Avoid Spinning Your Wheels

Jan 7th, 2008 | By Suzanne | Category: Self-Care | |

Basically, achieving goals comes down to two things:

  • Desire
  • Belief

Fear, uncertainty or doubt creeps into either or both of those things? Forget it - you’re not going to achieve that goal. Period. Harsh, I know - but true.

Think about it. Take a goal you REALLY, REALLY want to achieve. I mean you want it so bad you can taste it. You eat, sleep and breathe it - but you don’t achieve it. Bet your bottom dollar you will find the culprit somewhere in your beliefs. Somewhere you believe you can’t do it, don’t deserve it or just plain don’t believe it can happen for you.

The same is true for a goal you REALLY, REALLY believe you can achieve. I mean you could accomplish it with your eyes closed, hands tied behind your back and hopping on one foot - yet you don’t achieve it. Bet you didn’t really want it, after all. It wasn’t as important to you as other things were, so you let it go.

Think for a minute about your top 3 goals. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being I couldn’t care less and 10 being I want it NOW, how much do you want it? Give each goal a Desire score. Now, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being no way, not even with all the help in the world and 10 being an emphatic absolutely, yes I can, how much do you believe you can do it? Give each goal a Belief score.

Now, look at those scores. Guess what? If you’re not scoring 8 or above for both Desire and Belief - you’re probably not going to achieve that goal. But don’t give up the ship just yet.

If you are scoring high on Desire, but lower on Belief, you can change your beliefs and thereby change your Belief score. In my humble opinion, these are the goals (in addition to the ones that made the 8/8 cut) that are worthy of your time, energy and talent.

On the other hand, if you are scoring low on Desire, but higher on Belief, get yourself some new goals. I mean, really - if you don’t want it, you don’t want it. Let it go. Find something you can really throw yourself into and give it the benefit of your time, energy and talent.

Don’t waste another precious minute spinning your wheels, ok?
