Resistance to What Is Adds to Overwhelm
Aug 1st, 2007 | By Suzanne | Category: Accountability | |Somethings just are what they are, the way they are, and that’s just it…can’t change it. Wanting them to be different is not going to do anything but frustrate you.
Resistance to what is amplifies overwhelm, as well…and when you’re in overwhelm, why make it worse?
If you’re frustrated and overwhelmed, doesn’t it make sense to take a good, hard look at what is? So you know what you’re dealing with, at the very least. Get the ‘lay of the land’, so to speak. Then, and only then, will you be able to start making decisions that will lead you out of the overwhelm you’re experiencing.
Say, for example, you’re running late, rushing out the door you get to the driveway to find you have a flat tire. No amount of jumping up and down screaming in frustration is going to change the fact that a) you’re already late, and b) you have a flat tire to change. No amount of wishing the tire wasn’t flat is going to inflate the darn thing. Yes, I suppose you could get in the car and drive off anyway, pretending the tire isn’t flat, but that’s just going to create you an entirely new set of problems in the long run, right?
It’s pretty easy to see what needs to be done: change the tire.
But what about in other areas of your life?
How much wishing your husband was a ‘cuddly kind of guy’ is going to get him to snuggle with you on the couch while watching a movie?
How much wishing you loved your job is going to make you enjoy going to it each day?
How much wishing your son was a ‘neat freak’ is going to make him voluntarily clean his room and keep it clean?
How much wishing learning a new skill didn’t take time is going to make you proficient in that new skill?
And maybe, most importantly, how much wishing your life was ‘different’ is going to make it different?
Don’t resist what “is” - embrace it, accept it. Doesn’t mean you have to like it, or be happy about it. Just accept it, because it’s the starting point for creating the life you really want to live.
