It’s fine to seek the opinion of others in the process of forming your own. We all learn from each other in that way, and that’s a good thing. It’s fine to enjoy the recognition of others for things you do well, but there’s only one person’s approval you really need: your own.

I have uttered these words twice in the last week, once to a coaching client and once to myself, both times in conversation about being a parent. The idea of being a lighthouse is certainly not limited to our role as parents. We can be lighthouses in all areas of our lives.

Would that we could do everything we do in life because we want to, not because we have to, huh? But I wonder - where are the ‘have to’ things coming from? As adults, who’s in charge of us, bossing us around, telling us what we ‘have to’ do?

How much of your life have you spent waiting? All of us have to spend time waiting - waiting in line, waiting in traffic, waiting in the doctor’s office. That kind of waiting is part of life and not the kind of waiting I’m referring to. I’m talking about waiting to be happy, waiting to be fulfilled, waiting be loved, waiting to be prosperous, waiting to be somebody. This kind of waiting robs you of your life and is so unnecessary.
