When You Love Someone

When you love someone you do not love them all the time, in exactly the same way, from moment to moment. It is an impossibility.

- Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Wow! No kidding, huh?

I came across this quote today and it struck me that long ago I experienced exactly what this quote is talking about. Unfortunately, I didn’t have benefit of reading this quote all those years ago, so I didn’t realize what an impossibility it was, and I felt bad for a long time because I didn’t think I was loving “correctly.” When I felt more, less or different love for a person one day versus the next, I thought it was just me and my inability to “get it right”. Particularly where my kids are concerned, but you know what? I think it’s even more important to recognize this fact in the relationships we have with the adults in our lives.

Why wouldn’t loving someone be an ebb and flow process like so many other things in life? With any relationship in your life, there are going to be times you feel closer and times you feel further apart…that’s part of the deal. The magic happens when both parties recognize the ebb and flow as being a natural part of the relationship, and not one day a sign of trouble, and the next day a sign of bliss.
